An artilleryman scans for signs of enemy activity. He wears the standard winter uniform, the regular woolen M36 tunic and trousers, woolen knit sweater, greatcoat, knitted torque beneath the steal helmet, and knitted gloves. While adequate for the comparatively mild German winter, it was next to worthless during the brutal Russian winter. His branch is identified by the bright red Waffenfarbe shoulder strap piping.

Today marks 106 years since the San Francisco Earthquake rocked our city. The death toll from the disaster is estimated to be above 3,000, representing the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California’s history.
